Engineers of the Future - Making a Difference Today

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers an exciting and challenging opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing an MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Deadlines for application are January 15th for fall admittance and September 15th for winter admittance. Students who apply for fall semester may attend earlier for spring or summer term upon departmental approval, after acceptance into the graduate program. However, enrollment cannot be delayed until the following winter semester.

Application Process

Applicants must have a BS in Mechanical Engineering or in an allied discipline (other engineering, physical, and mathematical science programs), with at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA in the last 60 hours of upper division coursework. Applicants with a BS in an allied discipline will be admitted provisionally and must take certain undergraduate courses as outlined in the Student Handbooks.

All applicants must submit scores for the general GRE exam. Average scores for recent years are: V-540; Q-746; W-4.3. Students with scores below these numbers must show aptitude in other areas to be admitted.

All applicants must complete the Statement of Intent. Students should express their interest in conducting research in a specific area and completing a thesis/dissertation. Some of the areas of research currently being conducted can be viewed on the Research Areas page. A coursework only option is possible under certain circumstances; however, funding is generally not available. In order to pursue this option approval must be obtained from the department prior to applying. These students should indicate such approval in their Statement of Intent.

International Students

International students must meet certain additional requirements such as an English Language Proficiency test and a credential evaluation which includes a comprehensive course-by-course evaluation and calculation of a grade point average (GPA). For more information please visit the International Applicants section on the Graduate Studies website.

Product Development

If applying for the joint degree program in Product Development, students must apply to the ME and MBA programs separately, making sure to indicate joint degree on both applications and in the Statement of Intent. The GMAT test is required in addition to the GRE. This program leads to a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering (MS) and a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA), which are conferred simultaneously. It takes about three years to complete both degrees. For more information on the Product Development Program go to: MS Product Development.
