MS Mechanical Engineering

Learning Outcomes Established for MS

  1. Program graduates will develop an advanced understanding of the governing principles which serve as the basis for the practice of mechanical engineering and have the ability to apply these principles in the design and analysis of a system or process to meet specified needs.
  2. Program graduates will participate in the creation of new knowledge and/or will advance the state-of-the-art in a specific sub-discipline of mechanical engineering through the completion of a thesis project. The thesis project may contain elements of design, experimentation, and analysis and will require innovation and creativity.
  3. Program graduates will develop technical writing and oral presentation skills.
  4. Program graduates will demonstrate a pattern of living consistent with high ethical and moral standards.

Admissions and Entry

Prerequisites

Applicants must have a BS degree in mechanical engineering for regular admission or a BS in an allied field (other engineering, physical, and mathematical science programs), requiring provisional admission. A GPA of 3.0 or above in the last 60 hours of upper division coursework is required.

Entrance Examinations

All applicants must submit scores for the GRE general examination. Average scores for recent years are: V-540; Q-746; W-4.3. International applicants must also submit TOEFL or IELTS test scores; university minimum scores are required.

Fall Semester: January 15; Winter Semester: September 15
Students who apply for fall semester may attend earlier for spring or summer term upon departmental approval, after acceptance into the graduate program. However, enrollment cannot be delayed until the following winter semester.

Course Requirements

MS-Thesis Option

Minimum 30 hours of course work, 15 of which must be ME courses, including 6 thesis hours.

MS Non-Thesis Option

Minimum 39 hours of course work, 18 of which must be ME courses. *Departmental approval is required prior to applying.

Residency Requirement

Work toward the Master of Science degree must be completed under the specific direction of a graduate faculty member while the student is in residence at BYU for at least two consecutive six-hour semesters. "In residence" is defined as living and conducting research in the general vicinity of the university where the student has ready access to research facilities and consultation with the faculty.
